Multicommunication
2019
Multicommunication means interacting with several people separately but at the same time. Usually multicommunication refers to parallel conversations enabled by communication technologies. The essential element is interactivity: in multicommunication, several mutual, two-way interactions are managed between people. A few adjacent concepts related to multicommunication have also been used in the literature, including multitasking, media or electronic multitasking, polychronicity, and polychronic communication. Research interest in multicommunication is growing. Whereas the nascent phases of multicommunication research were largely concerned with observing the manifestation and characteristic…
A Time to Lead : Changes in Relational Team Leadership Processes over Time
2020
This study analyzes how team members perceive changes in relational leadership processes over time. Interview data from three virtual teams ( N = 18) were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The findings illustrate how ideals of well-functioning leadership and teamwork communication can differ both between and within teams at different times. Team members may perceive benefits of the passage of time in teamwork, including experienced closeness, adjustment, and clarification of practices, as well as challenges such as rigidity and historical baggage. Organizations and teams may experience a shift in the ideals of leadership, but adapting to and adopting new forms of leadership over…
Teams’ perceptions of charismatic leadership: The role of average perceptions and homogeneity in predicting team performance via intra-team communica…
2023
Pitfalls in Remote Team Coordination: Lessons Learned from a Case Study
2008
As companies become more and more distributed, multi-site development is becoming a norm. However along with the new opportunities, geographic distribution is proven to increase the complexity of software engineering introducing challenges for remote team communication, coordination and control. In this article we present an illustrative singe-case study with an intra-organizational intra-national context focussing on the effect of geographic distribution on team coordination practices and how this influences remote team performance. Based on our findings we conclude that a) distribution significantly influences the nature of coordination; b) remote team coordination mechanisms can't be cho…
Team communication in the workplace
2019
In today’s organizations, team and group communication is an essential part of work, and it is loaded with expectations. Despite the expectation that teamwork offers an answer to the intense demands of today’s dynamic, ubiquitously digital working life, taking advantage of its benefits is neither simple nor well understood. Teams represent various types of collaboration. Teams can be understood by observing their structures, practices, and processes as well as their functionality and goal achievement. This chapter provides an understanding of the multifaceted reality of groups and teams as it manifests in interaction. The chapter analyzes a variety of team phenomena in order to enhance and …
Slacking with the Bot: Programmable Social Bot in Virtual Team Interaction
2021
Nonhuman communicators are challenging the prevailing conceptualizations of technology-mediated team communication. Slackbot is a social bot that can be configured to respond to trigger words and, thus, take part in discussions on the platform. A set of 84 bot-related communication episodes were identified from a journalistic team's Slack messages (N=45,940) and analyzed utilizing both qualitative content analysis and interaction process analysis (IPA). This integrated mixed-methods analysis revealed novel insights into the micro-level dynamics of human-machine communication in organizational teams. In response to Slackbot's greetings, acclamations, work-related messages, and relational mes…
TeamSim: An Educational Micro-World for the Teaching of Team Dynamics
2008
In this paper we present an educational micro-world in which a learner can manipulate variables affecting the efficiency with which a team adapts to its environment. These include the structure of hierarchical relations within the team, the structure of the communications network, and other environmental parameters. Using the micro-world, the learner can design experiments (simulations) exploring notions in the dynamics of small groups. A freeware version of TeamSim is available from http:// laral.istc.cnr.it/gigliotta/.
The influence of friendship and communication network density on individual innovative behaviours: a multilevel study
2016
The present study examines whether teams’ friendship and communication network density are related to individual innovative behaviours (IIBs: idea generation, suggestion making, idea promotion and idea implementation). The study sample was composed of 28 teams comprising 101 members. The results obtained by means of multilevel structural equations modelling showed that friendship network density had an indirect positive relationship with the four IIBs through the density of team communication networks.
Vuorovaikutusosaamisen yhteisyys työelämän tiimeissä
2018
Teams are a very common way to organize work within a variety of fields. The role of competent communication in high-quality and successful teamwork is emphasized in both research and in working life discourse. However, research on communication competence in working life teams is scarce. Extant research lies heavily in the study of communication situations in short-term groups. The reality of working life teams differs from such groups. Teams work on varied, overlapping tasks, often over long periods of time. Moreover, extant research primarily has focused on competence as an individual quality. The objective of this study is to describe and understand the sharedness of communication compe…
